Dear Marsha,
What is an appropriate word for a 4 yr. old to call a fart? It tends to be embarrassing on us as parents when our child yells out “Mommy I Farted” in public.
Thanks,
Passing Gas
Dear Passing Gas,
It is perfectly normal and healthy for any one to pass gas, or the appropriate word for this body function is flatulence.
I can understand that this is sometimes considered inappropriate to be called a “Fart”. Even though Fart is now more of a common and excepted word than in the past.
As far as alternative names for flatulence, I have always chosen to go with the older words such as “Tooted”, or “Stinker”. Having a child say “Mommy I tooted” or “Mom I let a stinker” sounded much better than Farted. You can also cover either of those phrases up easily by replying “Yes dear you are a little stinker” or “Toot away dearie, Toot Toot”. Even though it may not mask the smell, it sure eases the embarrassment of the situation.
Always,
Marsha
